Hi
Thanks for your response to my post.
My grandparents are interred within a stones throw of the entrance gates to the right I only wish that I could afford to have them removed and interred elsewhere. My grandfather was a Metropolitan policeman from the end of the first world war until his early death I was told at his funeral he had a 'guard of honour' from police colleagues and was a lovely man. My grandmother survived him alone for another 30 years. Each family has a story to tell and those that own and manage this place should realise that there are people who are alive and are prevented by man and nature to be able to tend the graves of those we loved in life and continue to love in memory.

I recently visited the cemetery as two of my grandparents and a great aunt are buried there, in fact more of my distant family is buried there but their graves have been destroyed and the land taken.. this happens all too often, with large parts of the cemetery destroyed and the other parts left to overgrow, in preperation of their destruction no doubt.

there really is no hope for Woodgrange, unless the council take control of the site again and give it the attention in needs. Badgehurst acquired the land as part of a debt as i understand it and have never had any interest in the cemetery except in using it to recoup its initial losses, so no restoration work goes on at all. Its a sad thing that so many local people who lost their lives can be treated so shabbily in death, and that so many people willingly participate in the destruction of the site.

on recently attending the cemetery i found my grandparents headstone to have been smashed off of the grave, and a large tiered memorial behind the grave completely smashed to pieces. something no car or van could have done, just mindless and disrespectful vandalism, be it by people associated with the cemetery or others.

it saddens and angers me on every visit.

I have been researching a part of my family named DORRINGTON and have gone back to 1723 so far.I know we were huguenot originally, the family being silk weavers from Bethnal Green,Whitechapel and Spitalfields.I have been told there was a grave in the Huguenot Burial Ground with the name DORATIEGNE ,(I don't know if my spelling is correct),does any one know if this could be an original Dorrington ancestor or if the name is connected to the Dorringtons somehow?

My flat overlooks the Tower Hamlets Cemetery. Imagine my surprise when, on a wander through one day, I came upon a gravestone with my name. You've even got a picture of it here - #19. Now, when I have visitors and we go for a walk, I take them to see it!
